Nature & Biodiversity

Our Earth is home to a natural world with a richness of beauty and wonder beyond comprehension. Home to millions of types of plants and animals. Home to intricate, extraordinary, complex and intimately connected landscapes and ecosystems. From Ocean reefs, to deserts, mountains, forests, woodlands, wetlands, river systems, our Earth encompasses a dizzying and remarkable cradle of life.

Yet this shared heritage of all of us is in deep trouble and needs our concerted thinking and action.

Our world is in the grip of an extinction crisis. The combined pressures of population growth, overconsumption and global warming threaten much of the extraordinary nature of our planet.

The immense loss of and pressures on the natural world can seem overwhelming. Yet there is hope. Rather than responding to these threats by contracting into a diminishing vision, a growing group of people globally has dreamt big by recognising that nature needs large connected landscapes to allow the space for wildlife, wilderness and natural processes to survive and thrive.

In North America, this has come through a recognition that a continent-wide vision for protecting and re-connecting large tracts of wild nature is needed. In Europe, people are dreaming of re-wilding a continent that has lost much of its wild nature, and bringing nature back into its rural and city landscapes. In Australia, the early stages of a wild country vision have been built – an inspiring vision of a continent that allows space for wildlife, wilderness and natural processes to survive and thrive.

Central to all of these efforts is the understanding that conservation is essential for the survival of our own species. That Wild nature needs sufficient scale to ensure that natural processes can survive and thrive. And that connecting people with wild nature and protecting, restoring and connecting wild places holds out hope of a richer living planet that can once more fill our lives with wonder and enchantment.

Here you can share your efforts or join the global efforts to protect and restore the natural world of this extraordinary planet of ours.
